Top 10 Learning Management Systems

Learning management systems (LMS) are software programs that allow educators to manage the administration, delivery, documentation, reporting, and tracking of students’ or trainees’ progress through a course or training program. What are the top 10 learning management systems? We based our list (roughly) on Capterra’s list of the 20 most user-friendly LMSs for 2017.

1. Skyprep

Skyprep is ideal for corporate employee training management. Administrators can upload training courses into the Skyprep library, then use Skyprep to manage employee certification in online courses. Functions include exams, security controls, access from anywhere in the world 24 hours a day, and accessibility from any device.

2. Bridge

Bridge is the corporate LMS created by Instructure, whose scholastic LMS is Canvas (see #8). Its Arc system focuses on video-based learning and actionable reporting so that administrators know what content trainees respond to, which areas can be capitalized on, and how much trainees are retaining new information.

3. Litmos LMS

CallidusCloud’s Litmos LMS is a corporate training system that can be used for compliance training, customer training, employee training, and partner training all in one. It includes built-in e-commerce functions as well as an online course builder with templates for multiple formats, personalized learning paths that can be created from course content, and gamification with leader boards.

Pricing: $3 to $5 per month for groups with 150 to 500 active users; $2 to $4 a month for groups with 501 to 1,000 active users

4. TalentLMS

TalentLMS is another cloud-based LMS aimed at the corporate training market. Content for courses can be culled from Web sources or created using videos and presentations. Users can access an unlimited free trial (for up to 5 users and 10 courses) before deciding to upgrade to a paid plan.

Pricing: $29 a month for up to 25 users; $99 a month for up to 100 users; $199 a month for up to 500 users; $349 a month for up to 1,000 users

5. Mindflash Online Training

Since being founded in 1999, Mindflash has added more than 10 million courses, mostly aimed at corporate training. A wide variety of file types, including PowerPoint, can be used in the training module. This LMS offers automated quizzes that let users keep track of their progress as they go in real time.

eFrontPro LMS is a private cloud employee training system. Enterprise-ready features allow each branch of a company to have its own portal, segmentation features that allow the administrators to send offers to different audiences, strong security features, and an archiving tool that keeps courses from being accidentally deleted. eFrontPro is available in multiple languages.

Pricing: $750 per month for up to 1,000 users; $1,000 per month for up to 2,000 users; $2,000 per month for up to 5,000 users

7. Velpic

Velpic’s LMS claims to reduce time spent on training administration by 85% and time spent on training by 60%. However, its most notable feature might be virtual reality training. Velpic allows administrators to make 360° virtual reality videos.

Pricing: $269 per month for the Basic package; $449 per month for the Growth package; $719 per month for the Ultimate package

Instructure’s scholastic LMS tool can be used at any academic level, from kindergarten to higher education. Since it was launched in 2011, Canvas has been put into use by more than 2,000 schools. In 2012, Instructure lauched Canvas Network, a massive open online course (MOOC) network open to anyone with Internet access. Canvas K-12 encourages interaction between students, parents, and the school system.

Moodle is free open courseware under a GNU General Public License. First released in 2002, it’s one of the oldest LMSs still around. Moodle is available in more than 100 languages and can be installed by any site administrator. Perhaps its most famous user is the government of the United Kingdom, which uses Moodle as a training platform for its civil servants.

10. Looop

Looop offers a simple interface and tools that allow for mass actions for administrators, making it among the most user-friendly LMSs. Users can be removed, for example, without losing the records of their training.
